From Domain to Launched
Every step between "it's available" and "we're live," in the order you should do them.
Email authentication guidance reflects the Google and Yahoo sender requirements enforced since late 2025. Last reviewed July 2026.
Step 1: Register it right
Buy at a reputable registrar and turn on auto-renew. Expired domains kill businesses, and good ones get sniped within hours of lapsing.
Turn on registrar lock (also called transfer lock). It blocks unauthorized transfer attempts and is usually free.
Enable WHOIS privacy so your personal address and phone number are not published for spammers to harvest.
Protect the registrar account itself: unique password plus MFA. Domain hijacking usually starts with a hacked registrar login, not the domain.
Step 2: Point your DNS
Learn the four records you will actually touch. A/AAAA points your domain at hosting, CNAME aliases one name to another, MX routes your email, TXT proves ownership and carries email authentication.
Document every record you add and keep DNS hosted somewhere you trust. Mystery records are how migrations break years later.
Enable DNSSEC if your registrar and DNS host both support it. It prevents attackers from forging DNS answers for your domain.
Step 3: Set up business email
Use real business email on your domain (you@yourbusiness.com) via Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. A free personal Gmail address costs you trust with every message.
Publish SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records from day one. Google and Yahoo require them for bulk senders and reward every sender with better deliverability. They also stop criminals from spoofing your new domain.
Start DMARC at p=none to monitor, then tighten to quarantine or reject once the reports look clean.
Step 4: Hosting and SSL
Choose managed hosting with automatic SSL certificates. Let's Encrypt certificates are free and renew themselves. There is no reason to pay separately for basic SSL.
Redirect http to https, and pick one canonical home: www or the bare domain, never both serving separately.
Step 5: Get found
Claim your Google Business Profile if you serve local customers. It is the highest-leverage free listing on the internet.
Set up Google Search Console, verify the domain, and submit your sitemap so Google starts indexing immediately.
Install analytics before launch so your day-one traffic is not lost forever.
Step 6: Launch QA
Click every link and submit every form, on a phone. Most of your visitors are on mobile; test there first.
Check the small stuff: a custom 404 page, a favicon, and a social preview image so shared links look professional.
Take a full backup of the finished site before you touch anything else.
Or skip the whole list
Most standard domains are included free with Marshland hosting. We register the domain, wire up the DNS and email records above, and hand you a launched site.
